Periodontology is the dental specialty concerned with the health of the gums and the bone tissue supporting the teeth. If gum disease is not detected early, it can lead to tooth loss and contribute to various systemic health conditions.
Symptoms of Gum Disease
- Bleeding gums (when brushing or spontaneously)
- Swelling, redness, and sensitivity
- Bad breath (halitosis)
- Gum recession making teeth appear longer
- Loose teeth
- Pus discharge between gums and teeth
Treatment Stages
1. Scaling (Tartar Removal)
Tartar deposits on tooth surfaces and within pockets are removed with an ultrasonic device and hand instruments. At the early stage of disease (gingivitis), this procedure is sufficient.
2. Root Surface Planning (Curettage)
Root surface irregularities in deep periodontal pockets are smoothed and the pocket interior is cleaned. Performed painlessly under local anaesthesia.
3. Periodontal Surgery
In advanced cases: flap surgery (pockets are reduced), bone grafting (bone loss is addressed), or gum aesthetics (gingivoplasty) may be performed.
Gum Aesthetics
If excessive gum is visible when you smile (gummy smile) or you have asymmetrical gums, an aesthetic appearance can be achieved with gum contouring. This procedure is often combined with smile design.
Gum Disease and General Health
Research shows a significant relationship between untreated periodontitis and the risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and premature birth. Gum health is an inseparable part of overall health.
