What Is Gum Disease?
Periodontal disease is a bacterial infection affecting the tissues and bone supporting the teeth. Gingivitis (early stage) is fully reversible; periodontitis (advanced stage) causes irreversible bone loss and can lead to tooth loss.
Warning Signs
- Bleeding when brushing or eating
- Swollen, red or tender gums
- Persistent bad breath
- Receding gums
- Loose teeth
Treatment Options
Early-stage disease is treated with professional cleaning and oral hygiene instruction. Advanced cases require deep scaling, root planing and possibly surgery. Regular 3–6 monthly maintenance is essential after treatment.
